Blazing a New Trail: Over 150 Indiana Students Graduate with Career-Connected Pathways

This spring, as caps fly and diplomas are handed out, over 150 Indiana students are celebrating more than just graduation—they’re stepping confidently into the future. These students are the first to complete the Career+ Pathways™ Locally Created Graduation Pathway, a new and innovative option that connects classroom learning to real-world experience.

A Purposeful New Path

This pathway is the result of a true statewide collaboration—crafted with input from educators, employers, regional workforce agencies, and community leaders. Guided by the Indiana Department of Education, the Career+ Pathways™ Locally Created Pathway was designed to ensure students graduate with not only a diploma, but also with direction, experience, and credentials that count. Aligned with Indiana’s new Honors Diploma Seals and work-based learning requirements, the pathway equips students for success in college, careers, and beyond—offering structure, support, and real momentum for the future.

A High School Experience That Matters

The Career+ Pathways approach is built around a powerful idea: help students discover what motivates them, connect them with hands-on learning opportunities, and equip them with skills they’ll carry into whatever comes next.

Throughout their high school journey, students completed:

  1. Career chats and job shadows to explore careers they’d never considered
  2. On-site visits and career rotations to observe professionals at work
  3. Internships and skills bootcamps , gaining 75+ hours of authentic work-based learning
  4. Microcredentials in leadership, time management, communication, and problem-solving

Each of these experiences provided valuable real-world skills while also fulfilling key graduation requirements

Clarity, Confidence, and Career Direction

For many students, the journey began with uncertainty about their future. But through intentional coaching, employer engagement, and personal reflection, they built confidence and direction. Some discovered a passion for healthcare or advanced manufacturing. Others saw themselves in IT, education, or entrepreneurship. The pathway didn’t just expose them to possibilities—it empowered them to act.

A Win for Students, Schools, and Employers

This locally created pathway offers benefits for everyone involved:

  1. For students , it becomes a launching pad for college and careers, giving them real skills and meaningful choices.
  2. For schools , it provides a flexible, aligned option to meet graduation goals and accountability requirements, while reducing administrative complexity.
  3. For employers, it creates a talent pipeline and a way to shape the future workforce by engaging students early.

Just the Beginning

These graduates are proof that when we rethink how we prepare students for life after high school, we unlock new possibilities. The Career+™ Locally Created Pathway is more than an academic program—it’s a movement to ensure that every student graduates with experience, purpose, and a plan.

They may be the first—but they won’t be the last.
