In a world where the traditional path from high school to college, often regarded as ‘Plan A’, is no longer the only route to success, Career+™ emerges as a pioneering initiative reshaping the future for Indiana’s youth. This comprehensive program offers a new vision, breaking down barriers between education and the workforce
Mission: A New Horizon in Education and Career Development
Career+™ is committed to guiding students from high school graduation to local, in-demand entry-level jobs, apprenticeships or college internships. This approach not only provides debt-free routes to career qualifications and college degrees but also enhances students’ earning prospects and career progression with hands-on experience. By doing so, it addresses the needs of over 60% of Indiana students seeking alternatives to the traditional 4-year college education.
Entry Point: Employer Validated Skills-based Microcredentials
At the heart of Career+™ program lies its innovative microcredential system, serving as a pivotal entry point for students into the Career+™ Ecosystem. These microcredentials, encompassing Next Level, Workplace Communication, and Workplace Leadership, are seamlessly integrated into existing curricula, enabling the expansion of career-connected learning without the addition of new classes. Starting with the Next Level Microcredential in 8th grade, students explore in-demand local careers and develop essential employability skills, forming a 4-year roadmap for high school.
The journey continues with the Workplace Communication Microcredential in 10th grade, where students refine their plans and prepare for internships or apprenticeships, supported by employer supported events during the school day. Finally, seniors engage with the Workplace Leadership Microcredential, aligning their passions and skills with local economic opportunities and leveraging this at the “HireME!” hiring fair to secure future job, apprenticeship or internship placements. Students completing the series receive 3 credit hours from Ivy Tech that can stack into programs in advanced manufacturing, healthcare, supply-chain and logistics fields. This comprehensive approach has engaged over 3,164 students, effectively blending academic learning with practical career development.
Experiential Learning: A Core Element
Experiential learning is central to Career+™, offering real-world experiences that align education with industry needs. Initiatives like Career+™ Chats, Tours, Rotations, and Skills Bootcamps provide students with practical insights and direct connections to regional employers, making their learning dynamic and relevant. In 15 months, Career+™ has linked 6,869 students with over 50 employers through about 300 early career experiences, leading to over 4,000 career navigation interactions. Nearly 400 students participated in our inaugural ‘HireME!’ event in April 2023.
A Success Story: The Career+™ Tour
A prime example of the program’s impact is the Career+™ Tour – a curated learning experience on the site of partner employers. One such experience was held on November 6th, 2023, at IU Health Arnett Hospital, Franciscan Alliance, and Ivy Tech’s School of Health Sciences. This event saw 87 students discovering various career opportunities in healthcare. Remarkably, 90% of the attendees identified a career path they were interested in, with 75% showing interest in programs offered by Ivy Tech. This tour not only opened their eyes to potential careers but also guided 62 students in seeking follow-up support for the college admissions process, demonstrating the program’s effectiveness in bridging the gap between education and career aspirations.
The Power of Community Collaboration
In the first two pilot years this innovative program was a collaboration between Greater Lafayette Commerce, Ivy Tech Community College, 21 regional schools, over 50 regional employers, and Career+™ Pathways. This partnership highlights the community’s commitment to developing local talent and aligning educational initiatives with regional economic needs. Career+ continues to grow and expand throughout the state.
