Work + Learn Indiana Impact Award Nominations

Greater Lafayette Career+™ and Kara Webb: Driving Innovation and Excellence in Workforce Development

As Indiana gears up for the 18th Annual Impact Awards Luncheon on February 22nd, part of the Indiana Work-Based Learning Conference organized by Indiana Work and Learn, the spotlight shines on two noteworthy nominations. The Greater Lafayette Career+™ program and Kara Webb, Workforce Development Director at Greater Lafayette Commerce, stand out for their remarkable contributions to workforce development and education.

Innovative Program of the Year: Greater Lafayette Career+™

Nominated for the Innovative Program of the Year, the Greater Lafayette Career+™ initiative is a trailblazing partnership between Greater Lafayette Commerce, Ivy Tech Community College-Lafayette, 21 regional schools, over 50 regional employers and Skyepack (dba Career+™ Pathways). This program transforms the conventional approach to career planning and education by initiating involvement as early as the 7th grade. It strategically views post-secondary paths and careers as a continuum, providing students with hands-on experiences in fields like advanced manufacturing, logistics, supply chain, and healthcare through its microcredential series and Career+™ Experiences Platform.

What sets Career+™ apart is its commitment to accessible student participation. It offers industry tours, chats, and work-based learning opportunities, allowing students to acquire practical skills for internships, apprenticeships, and immediate employment. Additionally, the program incentivizes continued education through employer-offered or state-sponsored tuition assistance programs. By embedding these opportunities into everyday lessons, Career+™ ensures that every student, regardless of their background, can access and master the skills needed for success in the modern workforce. This initiative has already made a significant impact. The Ecosystem serves 15,110 students in grades 7-12 from 21 different schools across a seven-county region in West Central Indiana. In 15 months, Career+™ has connected 6,869 students with over 50 employers through nearly 300 early career experiences.

Career Development Professional of the Year: Kara Webb

Kara Webb’s nomination as the Career Development Professional of the Year is a testament to her visionary leadership in workforce development. Serving as the Workforce Development Director for Greater Lafayette Commerce, Kara has been pivotal in creating transformative programs like Manufacturing Week, Robotics Camps, CoderDojo, and the Career+™ initiative. These programs have significantly expanded career development opportunities for K-12 students across nine counties.

Her efforts personify the spirit of Greater Lafayette, making it an exemplary community for growth and education. Kara’s dedication and innovative approach have positively shaped the career trajectories of countless students, preparing them for a future in a rapidly evolving job market.
